What is a Jamboree?
A great outdoor adventure conducted by the Boy Scouts of America every four years. Thousands of Scouts and leaders camp together and participate in many exciting activities.
Where and when will it be held?
The Summit Scout Reserve in West Virginia. The official jamboree program will be conducted July 15-24, 2013.
Who may attend?
All jamboree troops/teams/crews will be organized as provisional troops/teams/crews. Troop/team/crew leaders will be selected by local council jamboree committee(s).
Boy Scout and Varsity Scout Qualifications
Boy Scouts and Varsity Scouts must be at least First Class Scouts. They must have completed the sixth grade or be at least 12 years of age by July 1, 2013, but not have reached their 18th birthday by August 2, 2013. All Boy Scouts and Varsity Scouts must participate in a prejamboree training experience; file a complete Personal Health and Medical Record, No. 67-34412, prior to the prejamboree training; have been active in a troop or team for at least six months prior to July 1, 2013; and be approved by the unit leader and local council.
Venturing Qualifications
Crew members must have a current BSA membership with a Venturing crew. They m ust have graduated the 8th grade or be at least 14 years of age by the first day of the jamboree, but have not reached their 21st birthday by the last day of the jamboree. They must p articipate in a pre-jamboree training experience; file a complete Personal Health and Medical Record, No. 67-34412, prior to the prejamboree training; and be approved by the unit leader and local council.
How much does the Jamboree cost?
We currently anticipate that our Council fee will be $2,000 per Scout. This fee pays for your transportation to and from the Jamboree, three meals a day from supper on July 26 through breakfast on Aug 5, for the tents and cooking gear you will use while at Jamboree, for several patches and a Jamboree neckerchief, Jamboree hat, 3 T-shirts, and for all the activities you can participate in for 9 days (that is, there is no additional cost for taking Merit Badge classes, visiting exhibits, or any other activities. Note that day visitors are not allowed to participate in most of these activities that are reserved for Contingent members). You will need to plan to purchase extra uniform parts (see the uniform requirements below), with the patches to go on them. There will be extra costs if your troop decides (as most troops have) to design their own Jamboree T-shirts.
What are the requirements for the Scout Uniform while at Jamboree?
On the way to and from the Jamboree, and for special events, such as the arena shows, flag ceremonies, etc. all Scouts are expected to be in full Class A uniform, which means Scout or Venturing Class A shirt with all appropriate patches for your Jamboree Troop/Crew (not your home troop), the Jamboree neckerchief with an appropriate slide, a Scout belt, Scout shorts, and Scout socks (your Jamboree Troop/Crew will decide which style of socks to wear, but all members of a Troop/Crew will wear the same style). For other activities at the Jamboree, Scouts are expected to wear Scout/Venturing shorts with a Scout/Venturing belt, Scout/Venturing socks, and a Scout/Venturing T-shirt. Your Jamboree Troop/Crew may decide what T-shirt to wear on which day, or they may leave it up to each Scout to decide.
Will I have a chance to wash my clothes at the Jamboree?
There are no laundry facilities at the Jamboree for Scouts to use. However, many units carry buckets that can be used to wash out socks, underwear and T-shirts which can be hung to dry. This means that you should plan to bring multiple pairs of socks and shorts, as well as a number of T-shirts. Your Jamboree Scoutmaster/Advisor can give you more advice on what to bring.
When are my payments due?
A $100 deposit is due at the time you sign up. The next payment of $225 is due prior to February 1, 20012, with additional $225 payments due prior to April 1, 2012, June 1, 2012, August 1, 2012, October 1, 2012, December 1, 2012, February 1, 2013, and April 1, 2013. A final payment of $100 is due prior to June 1, 2013.
What happens if I don’t make a payment on time?
We anticipate that we will have more applications from Scouts than we have positions available, so if you do not pay on time, you will be removed from the list of confirmed reservations and placed on a waiting list. When your payments are up to date, you will then be moved up the waiting list as openings become available.
If I can’t go to the Jamboree, can I get my money back?
You may get your full deposit back anytime prior to July 1, 2012. After that, if another Scout is on the waiting list and takes your spot, you will be refunded all money you’ve paid so far, less the $50 nonrefundable fee. If no Scout takes your place by the time we leave for the Jamboree, you will receive 50% of the money you’ve paid. If you must drop out due to family emergency or an illness, certified by a physician, you may get a full refund less any costs already incurred on your behalf.
Refund Policy
If you sign up for the jamboree and then find you cannot attend, you will receive a refund only if your council has an alternate to take your place.
Can I go for only part of the Jamboree?
If you go as part of a Council contingent, we expect that you will be with us for the entire time, and that you will go and return on the busses with us. Occasional exceptions have been made for Scouts who must leave early to begin training for school athletics or in case of family emergencies, but a major part of the experience is working as a team with your fellow Scouts to set up and break down the camp.
Do I have to attend the Training weekends in the spring of 2013?
Yes, this is not optional, as this is the time when you will learn how to use the gear that you will be using at the Jamboree and when you will be working with the other Scouts in your Troop/Crew to develop the teamwork you’ll need to have a good experience living together for 10 days at the Jamboree. It is anticipated that the trainings will be held in April and May, 2013.
Do I have to travel to and from the Jamboree with the Contingent Troop/Crew?
Yes. The only exceptions will be for Scouts with family emergencies who may be allowed to arrive late or leave early.
May I choose which Troop/Crew I will be in?
When the Scoutmasters/Advisors for the Jamboree contingent Troops are announced, Scouts will be notified and may then request, or a first-come first-served basis, which Scoutmaster they wish to go with. Requests will receive consideration, however final assignments will be determined by the Scoutmasters.
If I don’t go with a Council Troop, may I visit the Jamboree anyway?
All Scouts and their families are welcome to visit the Jamboree at no cost during the day. However, you may not stay overnight, you must provide (or purchase from the snack bars) you own meals, and you will not be allowed to participate in many of the activities which are restricted to the full-time, paying participants.
When will the next Jamboree be held?
The next National Jamboree will be held in 2017
Are there Scholarships available to help me pay for the Jamboree?
There may be a limited number of Council Jamboree scholarships available from National BSA for those Scouts who meet the requirements. Scholarships won't be awarded until the spring of 2013. Please remember that there is no guarantee that there will be any scholarships. The scout needs to continue to work to pay his own way.
Patches
Patch trading is a favorite activity for scouts at the Jamboree. Each council develops custom council strips and OA lodge flaps just for the event. These patches get swapped for others – much like baseball trading cards. Before the jamboree, the jamboree committee will be taking orders for extra patches. Discuss patch trading with your son to see what his interest level could be. Many scouts arrive regretting they didn’t bring along enough patches to swap.
Whom can I contact if I have questions?
Any of the jamboree troop/crew leader contingent or jamboree committee members would be happy to answer your questions. These following leaders are Scoutmasters/Advisors of the council contingent troops with email and cell phone contact information.

What subcamp will our jamboree units be camping?
The Summit is a brand new facility. Each Quivira Council Troop/Crew will be assigned a different subcamp and will not be camping together.
What items do scouts get for the trip?
Quivira Council Scouts get some goodies to take along. Custom luggage is included in your jamboree fee. These include a plastic trunk for luggage and a travel bag. This luggage is customized to keep the gear easy to sort and track during our travels. When thousands of scouts are at airports, it’s easy to misplace luggage so you’ll get luggage to pack your personal items.
Some uniform items are included as well:
1.
Jamboree Neckerchief – 2 (one before and one after)
2.
National Jamboree hat – 1
3.
Jamboree Patch – 2 (one additional with their paid fee)

7.
